Gluten free fish and chips can be a right pain when you’re coeliac because it’s so difficult to find anywhere that does gluten free batter and surely that’s the best part. You could make your own batter at home but that can often feel like a hassle so what do we do! I’ve been trying out this idea as an alternative and I’m really liking it so I wanted to share it with you as an alternative. I love them and they’re what I’m now calling fish nuggets. Not the most attractive name for something so yummy but that’s what they are!
The coating has a really lovely crisp to it, covers the fish well and tastes great. I’ve also used it with chicken for a chicken nugget effect, I love it more than the nuggets I remember from pre coeliac days! Also feel free to mix whatever spices and herbs you fancy into the coating, sometimes I’ve made them spicier or I’ve made them more herby when I’ve been coating the chicken instead.
Dairy free too and easy to make, whats not to love about these gluten free fish nuggets!
Gluten Free Fish Nuggets
- 2 haddock fillets, skinned and boned
- 100 g corn flour or tapioca flour
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds
- 2 tsp's of dill
- Pinch of dried chilli seeds
- Pinch of pepper
- Pinch of sea salt or himalayan salt
- Oil for deep frying
Take the haddock fillets and slice them into chunks, they don’t have to be even or look neat!
In a bowl mix together the pepper, salt, chilli and sesame seeds. Add the fish and coat well.
Have your corn/tapioca flour in a second bowl. Add the coated fish chunks and now coat really well with the flour.
Heat your oil to 180ºC in either a deep fryer or deep sided pan filled one third with oil.
Fry the fish nuggets in small batches for just a few minutes. Place them on kitchen paper to drain of any excess oil. Now they’re ready to serve with some mayo or ketchup, yum.
Why not try these crispy sweet potato fries to go with them. I’ve always found it really difficult to get them with that crisp rather than just a bit soggy, however when I did it this way it really worked. Give them a go and enjoy them along with your gluten free fish nuggets. x
