Last week for the first time in a long time I got glutened and it sucks. It happens to all us coeliacs now and again but when it hits, boom! That’s you out of action and feeling lousy for days.
So what did I get glutened from? a tub of hummus! yip actual hummus, I’m wondering how that is even possible but it happened. Why was there gluten in my bought hummus?! who knows, cross contamination in a factory probably and so there lies the age old coeliac question… are you safe when the label says ‘may contain’. Well I usually do stay away from ‘may contains’ just to be extra safe and I suppose it depends on how sensitive you are. As you can probably guess, due to the fact I got glutened from hummus, I am a sensitive coeliac.
The slightest crumb and my coeliac sensors are set off, in other words my stomach starts to feel a bit dodge and the lethargy sets in. Then if it’s more than just a small crumb the brain fog comes along, stomach cramps and I can get to the point I feel like I just can’t function. That to me is a glutening.
I feel annoyed at myself this time though because it was a risk I took just for the desire of hummus. Don’t get me wrong I checked the label and there was no gluten in it and I genuinely thought that even though it doesn’t have the gluten free label on it would surely be ok. I get it from other supermarkets and I’m fine. Lesson learnt.
It’s much more annoying when you eat something from a well known coffee shop which has a list of ingredients on it but still you end up glutened (lets guess who that could be). That time is was a salad but I’m guessing they never had the ingredients of the dressing down. I was newer to the coeliac game then, out to get some lunch with a group of people I was working with and didn’t know so just chose a salad so I didn’t look like I was being awkward. I really did think a salad would be safe! An hour later I had to leave work to go home and was out of action for a couple of days. I worked freelance so missed out on pay and even worse it had been a dream opportunity at London Fashion Week, I missed the show I was supposed to be working on.
So yeah, getting glutened is the worst. As for ‘may contains’, well I guess that’s the coeliac Russian roulette.
