The majority of the time being coeliac doesn’t bother me one bit and I don’t find it an issue, however on days like today it really gets me down. I’m back home in Scotland at the moment and I just went a regular day shopping to Edinburgh. Lunchtime strikes and all I want to do is get a quick bite to eat before I carry on in the hunt for some new clothes, but it’s not always that easy is it? What can be a simple shopping pit stop for most ends up being as big a stress as it was to find a jumpsuit that fits ok!
At first I thought it would be fine as I was in a high street store with a cafe that usually has a few gluten free items available in their cafe but how wrong I was. I could have an egg and tomato sandwich…. that was it…. and I’m not a fan of egg! ‘Well they had something’ you might think and maybe it is just me being picky but seriously, they could have at least had a choice of two. They sell plenty other gluten free products in the store, so put them in the cafe!
It just gets me down because if you’re in a place you don’t know over well then you are left thinking where do I go. I know that if I had walked away from where I was I would have got to an area where there was more independent cafes and I would have probably got something but I was just shopping for the day and just wanted a quick lunch. Anyway, I just had to think if I go to Pret then I know I can at least get soup, so out came the google maps to find the nearest one. Again though, that was my choice when I got there… soup…. on a hot summers day!
I know this is a bit of a moan but I hope as a coeliac you can understand where I’m coming from as it is just so frustrating that you only ever get one choice, especially in big name chains. It gets me so down every time this has happened to me because you do feel like you’re being such a hassle, especially if you’re out with someone else. Plus, I’m sure I’m not the only one who hates having to go around saying ‘have you got anything gluten free’.
I just think Edinburgh is a capital city and think how many people who are coeliac must walk along Princes Street everyday but yet we’re not catered for. I’m willing to put money on the fact that this is the case in many other cities around the U.K, even in London I find it a nightmare if I’m at the shops and want to get something to eat.
Something I’ve done for a long time is always have some sort of gluten free snack in my bag, like a trek bar, chocolate or cookie. It’s like an emergency kit just in case I can’t find a single thing to eat! I am an anxious person so maybe this subconsciously gives me some comfort to know I won’t go hungry! Believe it or not it has come in handy, I was at a really big event a few months ago and there was not a single food stall that had a safe gluten free option. Does anyone else do this or feel they have the same problems out and about?
